Many of you have hopefully heard or seen Coach Chuck Pagano‘s post game speech to the team after their hard fought victory in Nashville against division rivals the Tennessee Titans. He became visibly emotional and had tears in his eyes when he congratulated every man in the locker room. Instead of hearing about how the fans and media love his passion I see comments spewing out that he is soft and is just doing it for show. How dare you?
How dare you sit behind your keyboards or microphones and say that this man is doing it for show. This man has been ridiculed by so many people since becoming the head coach of his franchise that it’s hard to even remember a time when there were positive things said about him. Expectations were laid on his shoulders the day he took the job and by most accounts has done a hell of a job leading this team. He makes bone-headed calls sometimes and sometimes the team does not look prepared, but this man lays his heart and soul on the line for this team and those players every single week. Then coming into this season there is a “rift” between him and the front office which meant he is still expected to win and probably won’t have a job at the end of the season unless he’s lifting the Lombardi. He has to coach this team knowing that. So he gets emotional after finally winning a game after two stink-fests and he is doing it for show. How are you?
How dare you say this man is soft. This man has been through more than you or I could possibly understand in our entire lifetime. He fought a disease that nearly took his life. He battled back to full recovery and still kept his eyes forward for this franchise. He has lead this team while continuing the battle to three straight 11-5 seasons and all those seasons ended in the playoffs. He is the furthest thing from a soft head coach. Unless you’re comparing him to a guy like Bear Bryant who yells at his players and berates them in front of whoever can hear, then Chuck Pagano is not soft.
This seems really silly to write about, but you know what is even sillier? The fact that I have to because my opinion of this man is being ran through the mud because he cried during a post game victory speech. I have never met Chuck Pagano and I do hope someday that I am given the opportunity to do so. I would love to thank him for what he has done here. I know a lot of you who will read this will say that I’m a Pagano-apologist, and that is fine. I lean towards the belief that he has been given crap and told to turn it in to diamonds. He hasn’t turned them into diamonds yet, but who knows if he will ever be given that chance. Every Colts fan compares the Colts head coach to Tony Dungy and that just isn’t fair. Pagano is a player’s coach and so was Dungy. The difference? Dungy had a say in who he worked with while Pagano doesn’t. So go ahead and berate me on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook or any other form of social media. I will stand by Pagano until the day he is told to leave, just like his players are clearly going to do.
